The Rio Grande Farm Park has been busy throughout August!

August is the height of the growing season in the San Luis Valley so all of the commercial and family farmers have been hard at work tending and harvesting their crops.
The Mercadillo has been in full swing, with live paintings, live music, farm tours, food/ice cream/drink trucks, art & crafts, a bike rodeo, and lots and lots of local produce and products.

Our Rising Stewards program wrapped up at the beginning of the month with a final sign project.
The Farm Park hosted a water festival for kids. They learned about the importance of water and how it moves through the valley to other states, the importance of healthy river banks, water filtration, and water macroinvertebrates.
Volunteers have been out helping improve the Farm Park. The Southwest Conservation Corps came out one day and re-adobed the horno to make it last for years to come. More volunteers showed up early on a Saturday and did many tasks around the Farm Park. They improved the steps at the pond to ensure safety for the Farm Park workers when monitoring our water, and they helped apply a water sealant to the Education Center to help protect it from the weather.
The Farm Park is hosting 5th day students. On Friday’s school age kids have the day off from school but 5th day activities allow them to still be around their friends, spend time outside, and it allows them to learn and interact more with the environment.
